This itinerary assumes you're flying into Srinagar and starting/ending there, which is how most first-time visitors structure their trip. It covers the three destinations almost every Kashmir trip should include, with enough breathing room to actually enjoy each stop rather than rushing through.

Day 1 — Arrive & Explore Srinagar

  • Arrive at Srinagar Airport, check into your houseboat or hotel
  • Afternoon: Mughal Gardens (Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh) — walkable, relaxed, good for jet-lag recovery
  • Evening: Shikara ride on Dal Lake at sunset, followed by dinner (houseboats often include this)

Day 2 — Srinagar Old City & Local Culture

  • Morning: Old city exploration — Jama Masjid, local markets, Pashmina shopping
  • Afternoon: Optional visit to Hazratbal Shrine or a quieter walk around Nigeen Lake
  • Evening: Free time, or a Kashmiri Wazwan dinner experience

Day 3 — Gulmarg

  • Early morning departure from Srinagar (~1.5-2 hr drive)
  • Gondola ride (Phase 1, and Phase 2 if weather permits) for alpine views or skiing in winter
  • Lunch in Gulmarg, explore the meadow/golf course area in summer
  • Return to Srinagar in the evening, or stay overnight in Gulmarg if you prefer a slower pace

Day 4 — Travel to Pahalgam & Explore

  • Morning drive from Srinagar to Pahalgam (~2.5-3 hrs)
  • Check into your hotel, afternoon walk along the Lidder River
  • Optional: short visit to Betaab Valley if time and light permit

Day 5 — Pahalgam Valleys & Return

  • Morning: Aru Valley and/or Betaab Valley (whichever you didn't cover Day 4)
  • Early afternoon departure back to Srinagar for your flight, or extend if your schedule allows

What This Itinerary Deliberately Leaves Out

Sonamarg, Doodhpathri, and Gurez Valley are all worth visiting but don't comfortably fit into 5 days alongside Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam without over-packing your schedule. If you have 7+ days, Sonamarg is the easiest addition — it's a manageable day trip from Srinagar in the opposite direction from Gulmarg.

Budget-Friendly Adjustments

  • Do both Gulmarg and Pahalgam as day trips from a single Srinagar base to save on packing/unpacking and multiple hotel bookings
  • Book a houseboat instead of a hotel for at least 2 nights — often similar pricing with a more memorable experience
  • Travel outside peak season (avoid Dec-Jan and May-June school holidays) for noticeably lower hotel and taxi rates

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for Kashmir?

Yes, 5 days is enough to comfortably cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam — the three most essential Kashmir destinations — without feeling rushed, though it won't leave time for offbeat spots like Gurez Valley or Doodhpathri.

What is the ideal 5-day Kashmir route?

A common and efficient route is: Day 1-2 in Srinagar (Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, houseboat stay), Day 3 as a Gulmarg day trip or overnight, Day 4-5 in Pahalgam, then return to Srinagar for departure.

Should I stay overnight in Gulmarg and Pahalgam or do them as day trips?

Both work — day trips save on packing/unpacking and let you keep your main base in Srinagar, while overnight stays let you see sunrise/sunset light and avoid a same-day return drive. With 5 days, at least one overnight stay outside Srinagar is recommended to avoid over-packing your schedule.
