The crown jewel — Phase 2 takes you from Kongdoori mid-station to the summit of Apharwat Peak at 3,979 m. On clear days, Nanga Parbat (8,126 m — world's 9th highest) dominates the horizon. Phase 2 is entirely above the treeline with an Arctic landscape of snow and bare rock even in July.

Ride

Year-round (weather permitting)
💡 Expert Tip: Phase 2 often closes temporarily in bad weather or when winds exceed safe limits. Check status at the Phase 1 base station before buying tickets — non-refundable sales are common.
Phase 1 alone delivers outstanding value — rising from Gulmarg village to Kongdoori at 3,080 m through alpine meadows with spectacular valley views. For families with young children, the elderly, or those nervous about extreme altitude, Phase 1 is often the better choice.

💡 Expert Tip: Children under 3 may ride free — verify current policy at the ticket counter. Phase 1 is far less likely to be closed by weather conditions than Phase 2.
Gulmarg's Phase 2 opens as a ski resort in late December — expert skiers access off-piste terrain from the Apharwat summit down to Kongdoori and beyond. Snow quality is Himalayan powder at its finest. International ski instructors available at the resort base.

💡 Expert Tip: Helmet is mandatory for all skiers — bring your own or hire one. Early morning (9–11 AM) snow conditions are best before afternoon softening. Always ski with a guide until you know the runs.
First-timers don't need the gondola at all — Gulmarg's broad meadow slopes at village level (2,650 m) are gentle, wide, and perfect for learning. Ski school operates from November to March with English-speaking instructors. Best first-timer option before progressing to Phase 1/2 runs.

💡 Expert Tip: Book ski lessons for the following morning when you arrive in Gulmarg — popular slots fill by 9 AM. Ask your hotel or hostel to pre-arrange through KashmirStay.in operators.
In summer, the gondola transforms — meadows are carpeted in wildflowers, the valley is intensely green, and the Phase 2 summit offers cool relief from valley heat (10–15°C at Apharwat vs 28°C in Srinagar). Summer crowds are lighter than school holiday peak.

💡 Expert Tip: Summer sunrises from Phase 2 are among India's most extraordinary views — the valley fills with cloud below you while the peaks glow. First gondola of the day (9 AM) is essential for this.
Tickets are sold at the base station (Gulmarg village) on-site. Online booking is available through J&K Cable Car Corporation website but capacity is released in batches. In July–August, arrive before 8 AM to queue — or book the previous day online. Phase 2 tickets must be purchased before boarding Phase 1.

💡 Expert Tip: Buy Phase 1+2 combined tickets in one transaction at the base — you cannot easily add Phase 2 at Kongdoori mid-station. Keep your ticket stub for the return descent.
The Apharwat summit is a dramatic Arctic landscape even in July — snow, bare rock, biting wind, and a staggering 360° panorama. Nanga Parbat dominates to the north; the Kashmir Valley spreads to the south. There are minimal facilities at the top — a tea stall only.

Can be severe
💡 Expert Tip: Altitude affects some visitors at 3,979 m — headache, nausea, or breathlessness are possible. Ascend slowly, drink water, avoid overexertion. Descend immediately if symptoms are severe.
Packing correctly transforms the gondola experience. Phase 1 top is 430 m above Gulmarg village — noticeably cooler and windy. Phase 2 is 1,329 m higher — always bring a warm jacket, gloves, and windproof layer regardless of the season.
Summer
Down jacket or fleece + windproof
Winter
Full thermal layers, ski jacket, gloves, boots
Year-Round
Sunscreen SPF50+, sunglasses
Footwear
Trekking boots or waterproof shoes
💡 Expert Tip: Sandals and light summer shoes are the most common mistake. The Apharwat summit is often snowy and wet year-round. Bring spare socks in a plastic bag.
The gondola ride itself offers constantly changing shots — rising above Gulmarg pine forests, crossing alpine meadows, and finally the bare-rock summit. Gear: wide-angle for summit panoramas, 70–200 mm for Nanga Parbat detail. Golden hour is Phase 1 ascent at 9 AM in summer.

💡 Expert Tip: The gondola cabin glass can cause reflections. Press your lens against the glass and cup around it with your hand to eliminate reflections during the ride.
You don't have to ski to justify visiting Gulmarg in winter — the gondola experience in snow season is completely unique. A pristine white world, frozen meadows, and the chance to see Kashmir's ski resort in full operation. Dress extremely warmly and enjoy the views without any sport requirement.

Snow walking, photography, cafés
💡 Expert Tip: Non-skiing winter visitors: take Phase 1 only and enjoy Kongdoori in snow — Phase 2 in full winter without ski gear is extremely cold and challenging to navigate on foot.
